Fix Etisalat BlackBerry patch
24/7 Update
An official release from RIM to remove the registration app http://na.blackberry.com/eng/ataglance/security/regappremover.jsp
The Problem

As a user of the Blackberry service provided by Etisalat, I received a patch from Etisalat recently. The patch, according to the SMS received from Etisalat, says this:
“Dear Etisalat Blackberry Customer, Etisalat is always keep to provide you with the best BlackBerry service and ultimate experience, for that we will be sending you a performance enhancement patch that you need to install on your device. For more information, please call 101″
After installing the patch from Etisalat, my BlackBerry Bold did indeed experience enhanced performance. The problem was, IT WOULDN’T STOP PERFORMING. And the battery drained in less than 2 hours.
DON’T WORRY,THERE IS A SOLUTION.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY A NEW BLACKBERRY FROM ETISALAT OR ANYONE ELSE.
The Solution
Some say you should uninstall the Etisalat patch, others say you should change the permissions of the application “Registration” to deny on all levels. THOSE METHODS DO NOT WORK. Etisalat installed a PATCH, not a SOFTWARE. There is only ONE SURE WAY to fix this problem, and that is to REFORMAT YOUR BLACKBERRY.
Reformatting is not as difficult as you think it is. It is a simple, 4-step process:
- Backup your device using Blackberry Desktop Software
- Reformat your Blackberry
- Re-install the latest Blackberry OS (depends on your BlackBerry model, latest one for Bold is v4.6.0.282)
- Restore your backup using Blackberry Desktop Software
By going through these steps, you get a freshly installed BlackBerry, with all your rubbish cleared out. It’s like getting a brand new BlackBerry, without buying a new one! Be bold, fix YOUR BlackBerry yourself!
BACKUP YOUR BLACKBERRY BEFORE YOU WIPE. IF YOU SCREW IT UP, I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.
How to wipe the BlackBerry using the BlackBerry
To do a simple wipe of your BlackBerry device, complete the following steps. This option is available with
BlackBerry Device Software 3.8 and later.
- In the device Options, click Security.
If you are using BlackBerry Device Software 4.1, click Security Options > General Security. - Click the trackwheel and select Wipe Handheld.
- Click Continue.
- Type “blackberry”. All the data on the BlackBerry device is erased.
On some new versions of blackberry software the menu navigation is slightly different.
- Go to Options
- Select Security Options.
- Select General Settings
- Click the Menu key
- Select Wipe Handheld
- Click Continue
- Type “blackberry”. All the data on the BlackBerry device is erased.
How to wipe the BlackBerry using your PC
- Note: If you are connecting via a USB HUB then these instructions may not work. Try connecting via USB on a PC that is not using a HUB.
Pre-Wipe Tasks
1. Download and install Jl_Cmder to your PC ( Click here to download Jl_Cmder )
2. Make sure ALL your data (i.e. contacts, appointments, memos and etc) are backed up or synced before proceeding! This will wipe everything off of the device
3. Make sure you have the latest version of both Desktop Manager and the Handheld OS installed on your PC. If you need them then download them from here:
4. From the PC navigate to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file vendor.xml
If you have never installed the Handheld OS before then the vendor.xml file will not be on the PC and you can skip this step
5. Plug the device into the PC using the USB cord and make sure Desktop Manager is closed
6. Remove the battery from the device
Wipe The Device
1. Wipe the device using Jl_Cmder – these screenshots are here to show you what the process would be like. It is a 5-step process when wiping with Jl-Cmder. BE PATIENT AND DO IT PROPERLY, IT WILL WORK.
This may take several attempts to connect to the device, so keep trying until it connects and wipes
2. The device will reboot to a white screen with a ‘507′ error. THIS IS NORMAL.

Install OS and Restore
1. Open Desktop Manager and select Application Loader
2. Install the OS by following the prompts and selections
3. The device will reboot. It can take up to 15 minutes for the 1st boot.
4. Restore the previously made backup or re-sync
5. Install the battery back into the device and unplug from the PC

BlackBerry Application Suite for Symbian Caught on Camera
There has been quite a bit of news related to the BlackBerry Application Suite while I was out on vacation sand surfing in Peru. We heard rumblings last year that RIM was working on a version of BlackBerry Application Suite for Symbian devices. Just like the Windows Mobile version the Symbian version was never released. It also was never caught on camera until the team at MaxPDA caught some video and pictures of a Nokia XpressMusic 5700 running a virtual BlackBerry OS.
I cannot understand why anybody would want to run the BlackBerry OS on a number pad phone but I guess there may be a few people out there. What do you think?
You can view the video of it in action at this link in Chinese (I think)

Leaked BlackBerry Application Suite Professional for Windows Mobile
We told you about BlackBerry Application Suite (BAS) Professional back in the day when we first got a copy of the application. Now the crack team at the XDA-DEV forums (via BBLeaks) have scored a copy that anybody can download. Thanks to Wakady for putting it out there.
In case you don’t remember BAS lets you run a virtual BlackBerry OS (4.5 if I remember correctly) on Windows Mobile devices. There do seem to be a few caveats the first being that it looks like this version requires a BES server to work. If I remember correctly BAS was supposed to come out in Professional and Personal version one for BES and one for BIS. Right now only the Professional/BES version has leaked.
Wakady also notes that he installed it on TAEL ROM Standard WM 6.5.1 & runs fine. He could not get past the registration screen without a BES connection.
Anybody with a Windows Mobile device want to give it a spin? You can find it at Mediafire at this link.

BlackBerry Curve #1 Selling Smartphone In The States… Again… I’m Calling BS Just Little Bit…
According to an IDC report, the BlackBerry Curve, once again takes the number 1 spot for the most sold smartphone in the United States. Not only is the the BlackBerry Curve king of the hill, 4 other BlackBerry devices round out the top 10. That being said, I have to call BS on these numbers.
For some strange reason IDC decided to lump all of various BlackBerry Curve models into one big group. When they say that the BlackBerry Curve is the number one selling smartphone in America what they really mean is the BlackBerry Curve 8300, 8900, and 8500 series devices were number 1. I don’t have any particular issues with how IDC does their math expect for the fact that IDC didn’t lump the iPhone 3G S, which came in second place, and the iPhone 3G, which came in fourth place, together.
Seeing how RIMarkable is a BlackBerry blog, I take every chance I get to tout how the BlackBerry is the most dominate smartphone in the United States. It always makes for interesting debate in the comments. 5 BlackBerry devices making the top 10 clearly illustrates this point. From this report, however, I don’t know that there is enough evidence to say that the BlackBerry Curve is the number one selling smartphone. It would be better to say that the BlackBerry Curve line-up is the best selling line-up of smartphones in the U.S.

BlackBerry Accessories Review: Executive Leather Shell for BlackBerry Storm
There are a lot of really good big brand name BlackBerry cases and skins out there. The only problem, usually, with a big brand name case is that it often carries a big brand name price tag. I’ve gotten numerous emails from BlackBerry users looking for a really good case, but, not wanting to spend as much or more on a BlackBerry case as they did their BlackBerry.
If you are an original BlackBerry Storm user, the Executive Leather Shell from Mobi Products just may fit the bill. The Executive Leather Shell is only $9.95, and, I have to to admit, when compared to some brand name cases costing $30 or more, is a pretty darn good BlackBery case.
The Executive Leather Shell is a two piece BlackBerry case that offers almost complete protection for your BlackBerry Storm. Only the side buttons and the screen are left unprotected. The back plate is made of a hard, but, flexible plastic shell overlaid with genuine leather. The front plate is a bit less rigid providing a rubbery feel and complete protection of the front and sides of your BlackBerry Storm.
The Executive Leather Shell for BlackBerry Storm doesn’t provide a belt clip, however, it is quite thin for a hardshell case and doesn’t feel bulky while in your pocket. The stylish design and touch of leather on the back plate quickly make you forget that this case only costs $9.95 + shipping and handling.
You can get more information about the Mobi Products Executive Leather Shell for the BlackBerry Storm in the RIMarkable Accessories Store.

Seven Days Till The ShockWave Hits The U.S.!

The Cyber Shockwave that is. I know there’s some confusion as to why I have chosen to follow this so I am going to highlight what the media alert states: “The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Cyber ShockWave Event Will Highlight Potential Communications Technology Risks.” That is why I’ve included it, because mobile communications is included. Here’s the media alert:
SMOBILE SYSTEMS SPONSORS CYBER ATTACK SIMULATION IN D.C.
WHAT:
The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is hosting a simulated cyber attack on the U.S. to highlight the potential risk for such an attack, and to examine the possible responses required should one occur. The BPC has assembled a working group of high-ranking former White House, Cabinet and national security officials to stage a real-time exercise with a mission of advising the President as the nation mounts a response to the crisis.
SMobile Systems, a leading mobile security company, is co-sponsoring and participating in the Cyber ShockWave event, and providing the software security defense component to the situation.
WHO:
Top former government officials will be participating, inlcuding:
- Richard Thorburgh, Former Attorney General
- Michael Chertoff, Former Homeland Security Advisor
- John D. Negroponte, Former Deputy Secretary of State
- Sam Nunn, Former Georgia Senator
- Others
SMobile executives participating and attending:
- Neil Book, president and CEO
- Richard R. Roscitt, SMobile Board of Directors, former president of MCI and former president of AT&T
- Joe Hagin, former White House Chief of Staff for Security and SMobile Chairman of the Board.
When:
February 16, 2010
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where:
Mandarin Oriental Hotel
1330 Maryland Ave. SW
Washington, D.C. 20024
Details:
The simulation will include top government officials playing the roles of Cabinet members playing the roles of Cabinet members confronting potential real-time crisis scenarios. Along with SMobile, they will identify the potential vulnerabilities of U.S. cyberspace and national security strategies for combating these possible future threats. SMobile will be on-hand to answer questions, regarding mobile technology infrastructure and how to prevent a mass attack.
Events such as this where they simulate an attack gives us insight where we are weak, and also give us an idea of what would happen. Just like fire drills, and any type of simulation, it can give a wider perspective to options, alternatives, and various solutions, what may work, and what will fail. Simulations such as this test software, reactions, actions, and solution. We know that there have been cyber attacks in the past, but to think we are infallible would be assuming so, as we are only as strong as our weakest link.
I’ll be waiting for this one. Keep you eye out and wait for more details as the event will be televised live. We’re really excited to be able to provide some coverage on this event, and looking forward to the results. If you have questions or comments, by all means please share.
